A Short History of Coffee

The discovery of coffee can be traced back to the 9th century A.D. where it was discovered in Ethiopia on the Horn of Africa. As the story goes regarding the discovery of the coffee bean, a goat herder named Kaldi, who the legend says, noticed his goats acting particularly vigorous after eating the berries of a certain tree. When he tried some of the berries himself, he felt the same renewed energy, and thus, the effects of coffee were known. There is also another story quite similar to the previous tale which involves a Yemenite mystic who, like Kaldi, saw goats acting unusually energetic when consuming the same fruits. upon trying them himself, the effects of coffee where discovered. Not long afterwards, traders began offering these coffee beans, and soon they made their way up into Arabia, then eventually throughout Persia, India and Turkey, then into Europe through Venice, Italy, where coffee reached popularity in the 17th century. Historically, the first coffeehouses were gathering places for political movement and debate.
In America coffee became the beverage of choice after King George III levied a rather stiff tax on tea and a few Boston natives decided to throw a rather famous "tea party" in Boston Harbor.

Important:
Large coffee corporations make their profits from buying the cheapest beans they can find on the market. More often than not, these beans come from mega-plantations and are machine harvested, packaged and stored for months on end to the point where coffee aroma has to be infused back into the beans during the roasting process. Then it's ground, repackaged and warehoused where it may sit on the shelf again for months before it is finally delivered to your local supermarket where again it may sit and "expire" even more until you finally get it home. This is a very unfortunate situation since the average coffee lover has accepted this product as "fresh" coffee when nothing could be farther from the truth.
