Earl was a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, created in 1806
for the English General Charles Grey. The tea gets its name from the second Earl
Grey, Charles II, who was given the tea as a gift, so the legend goes,
by a Chinese mandarin whose son was rescued from drowning by one of General
Grey's men.
However, since there is no record of General Grey ever being in China, the story really has no basis in fact.
